Interview Tips

Research and preparation

  • Research the organisation:
    - Look at their website;
    - Read their news;
    - Find any general and investment news about them, if you can.
  • Find out what the structure of the interview will be.  Will there be any technical, aptitude or psychometric tests?
  • Take an extra copy of your CV.
  • Make a list of questions that you need to ask. Consider taking the list into the interview.
  • Prepare answers for a range of standard interview questions, such as:
    - “Why do you want to work for us?”
    - “What do you know about our company?”
    - “What are your strengths and weaknesses?”
  • Take any references, code or screen shots of work done.
  • Dress formally for the interview.
  • Make sure you know exactly where the interview is being conducted and plan your route well in advance.
  • Leave extra time for delays before travelling.
  • Ask your Consultant for advice.

At the interview

  • Turn off your mobile phone.
  • When you meet the interviewer stand up, smile, say “hello” and introduce yourself with a firm hand shake.
  • Body language is important - make eye contact, sit up straight and smile.
  • Don’t talk too much, but do not answer questions with “yes/no”. Always go into details but do not waffle.
  • Demonstrate your ability for the role by producing references or previous work - e.g. screen shots or code examples.
  • Towards the end of the interview try to get direct feedback from the interviewer - e.g. “How closely do you feel my experience matches what you are looking for?” This will indicate whether the interviewer has any reservations about you and will give you the opportunity to overcome their doubts and re-answer the relevant points.
  • At the end of the interview, if you want the job, tell them. Say what you like about their company and where you see yourself fitting in.
