How To Write A CV

A CV is a tool to get you an interview. It is your mouthpiece before you get the chance to open yours! Having a dynamic CV that will grab attention is critical.
  • Ideally, your CV should be no more than three pages long.
  • Lay out your experience logically, with your most recent assignment first.
  • Use headings so that information can be found easily.
  • Consider having more than one CV. Tailor your CV for every job, highlighting your most relevant areas of expertise.
  • Your CV should always be a true representation of your skills, experience and qualifications. Do not lie or you will be caught out!
Structure

Personal information should be at the top of your CV. Include:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Telephone/Mobile
  • Email
  • Date of Birth
Profile

This should be a short paragraph outlining your achievements and goals. Tailor it for each application.

A skills matrix table can be used to outline your experience with each individual technology - e.g.

Work history

  • This should be in reverse chronological order (most recent job first).
  • Include the year and month you started and ended each job.
  • For each job include your main tasks and responsibilities, outline the technologies you used and how you used them. (e.g. do not just write you “worked on a help desk” - explain what technologies you supported, outline your main achievements and how you helped the company.

Interests and hobbies

This is important as it gives prospective employers an insight into you as a person. It helps them decide if you will fit in to their current team. Briefly list personal information such as interests, hobbies and charity work.
